To promote Human Values through Education & Culture
“The poet’s words can generate harmony and guide humanity towards a peaceful world in which the dignity of life is respected.” Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, Founding President of SGI.
SGI-Gulf in association with Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai International Academic City and with the support of its' sponsors and patrons has hosted a gathering of poets across the region at a poetry symposium under the banner of “The Poetic Heart: Connecting Humanity” for the past 07 years.
The first edition of this symposium was held on 16th February 2012 and was graced by seven distinguished poets and a world musician. The languages of poems recited at the 2012 event were in: Arabic, English, Japanese, French and Hindi. The subsequent events has had multiple languages and students selected across many schools from UAE. s
The themes of the poems at the events were around world peace, universal harmony, friendship, mother and protection of the environment. An enthralling musical performance by Mr. Jason Carter on his Harp-guitar and a mesmerising performance by Dr. Nizar Ghanem on his Oudh at these events added a unique melody to these events.
Dr Ayoub Kazim was the guest of honour in 2012, and both him and Dr. Shihab Ghanem were awarded the ‘Soka Gakkai Peace’ Award at the event. International singer Sami Yousuf was the guest star at the event in 2013, and the video of his song “Ala bi Dhikrika” , based on a poem by Dr. Shihab Ghanem was screened for the audience. Dr. Shihab Ghanem was honored for receiving two months earlier the Tagore Peace Award, of which he is the first Arab awardee.
Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Managing Director, TECOM, said, “The Middle East has always demonstrated a rich literary culture with poetry remaining an integral part of its tradition. The strong cultural diversity in the region warrants the need to encourage art in all forms.” He added,” The poetry symposium creates an ideal platform that stimulates the multi-cultural talent present within the UAE fabric. Furthermore, it is well-aligned with SGI Gulf’s vision to promote peace, cultural understanding and humane values through education.”
“In today’s obdurately self-centric existence, this event is a gentle reminder to keep the poet within alive – nurturing values of righteousness, courage, altruism and optimism,” said Dr. Akash Keiji Ouchi, SGI Representative for South Asia and the Middle East. In light of this poetic spirit, SGI-GULF is organizing the seventh edition of ‘The Poetic Heart’ to be held in February 2018.
This event would be an extended full day event with a larger number of poets, languages and student poets participating at the event. A student award is also planned to encourage student participation in writing and reciting poetry.
