ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

Caring for the

Earth Begins Within.

To unfold our humanity is to recognise that caring for people also means caring for the planet we share.

At SGI, environmental sustainability is rooted in the belief that human life and the natural world are inseparable. Lasting environmental change begins not only through innovation and policy, but through a transformation in awareness – where every individual chooses to live with greater responsibility, compassion and respect for all life.

A Philosophy of

Interconnectedness

‘When we care for and live in harmony with nature, we make a profound contribution to peace.’

Dr Daisaku Ikeda

SGI’s approach to sustainability is rooted in the Buddhist principle of the oneness of life and its environment—the understanding that the well-being of people and the planet are inseparable.

We believe lasting environmental change begins with human revolution – a transformation in the way we think, live and relate to the natural world. When compassion guides our choices, sustainability becomes a way of life rather than a goal.

Core Beliefs

  • The destruction of nature is the destruction of humanity.
  • Lasting change begins with a change in consciousness.
  • Sustainability must be rooted in peace, compassion and  justice.

In Harmony with the

UAE's Vision

The UAE has placed sustainability at the heart of its future through visionary initiatives such as Net Zero 2050, the Green Agenda 2030, renewable energy, mangrove restoration and marine conservation.

SGI Gulf complements these national efforts by fostering environmental awareness through education, community engagement and globally inspired sustainability initiatives adapted for local communities.

UAE Priorities:

  • Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park [World’s largest single-site solar park]
  • Planting of 100 million mangroves by 2030
  • UAE Energy Strategy 2050 •
  • Marine conservation & artificial reef initiatives

SGI Gulf Contributions

  • Environmental education in schools and community centers
  • Localising global initiatives such as Seeds of Change
  • Inspiring personal responsibility for sustainable living

Voices for

the Planet

‘Protecting our planet is a sacred responsibility.’

The environmental movement begins with a transformation in the way we see our relationship with nature. Explore reflections from Dr Daisaku Ikeda that illuminate the deep connection between humanity, peace and the natural world.

Life is a chain. All things are related. When any link is harmed, the other links are affected.”

Only when we living things are connected to nature, engaged with nature, are we truly alive and vigorous. To really be alive, one must be under the sun, the moon, the shining stars, surrounded by the beautiful greenery and pure waters of the natural world. A dirty, fouled environment is not natural. When people live in such surroundings, their hearts become polluted, too. That is the oneness of life and environment.

Nature is not something for human beings to use and exploit as they see fit, solely for their own interests. Both nature and humanity are simultaneously parts and full expressions of the life of the universe. Nature and humanity are one…to destroy the natural world is to destroy the very foundation of human existence.

Life is a chain. All things are related. When any link is harmed, the other links are affected. We should think of the environment as our mother—Mother Soil, Mother Sea, Mother Earth. There is no crime worse than harming one’s mother.
